Welcome to ARTE’s Blog. Are you ready for ARTE in the Oasis Mall tomorrow? My name is Darcy, but many of you know me as the camel lady. Each week, I will be featuring a member of ARTE. Over the coming weeks, I hope you will discover some new faces, rekindle a love for more familiar faces and get to know all of the artisans that you support.
Many of you will know this week’s featured artist. It is the queen of cats – Eva of Eva’s Cats.
Eva is originally from the Urals in Russia, but has lived in the UAE for 10 years. Eva looks so young – you would never guess that she has a 24 year old daughter! She’s married to Francois, who can often be seen by her side at ARTE. In fact, it was her husband that first inspired Eva to make her famous cats.
“My husband is allergic to cats. I wanted a cat so I took left over curtain material and I made 2 black and white cats as a surprise for him”. When friends came over to their house, they all wanted cats of their own so she started making cats for them. One day a friend told her about ARTE and encouraged her to join. The rest is history!
Eva has been a member of ARTE for 5 years, but she remembers when she first joined. Her English was very weak and when she wrote a simple e-mail asking Miriam, a co-founder of ARTE, how to join, she sat with a dictionary looking up all of the words! Her English has come a long way since then thanks to all of the wonderful friends she has met at ARTE!
Eva’s fabrics are fabulous and I asked her where she gets her inspiration from. “I love fabric and creating new designs. I travel a lot and from each country I love bringing home new fabric and ideas”. Eva is famous for her cats, but she also makes camels, dogs, owls and fish, however; she is not limited to these. “If you ask for it, I will attempt to make it!” Recently, Eva made a crocodile and here is a Rooster that she made for a friend:
You can find Eva at ARTE in Times Square and in Ras Al Khaimah’s Al Hamra Mall in March! Drop by her table and say hi. You can also follow Eva on Facebook
