This is our “meet a vendor’ series with a difference. Our Founding Members as those that have been with ARTE since the beginning. September 2005, ten years ago, ARTE started with about 30 vendors, of which at least 10 are still continuing to grace us with their presence and their amazing handmade arts & crafts regularly at the various markets.
Meet Founding Member Usama Afnan.
Usama is a regular presence at ARTE, travelling from Abu Dhabi for every market. Originally from Sudan, Usama has been living in the country for 15 years. With a B.A. in Fine Arts, Usama is greatly inspired by Monet and other impressionist styled artworks. His particular characteristic technique is applying oil paint in impasto style with a palette knife. The vibrancy and movement achieved in his works can be contributed to the fact that Usama loves to paint outdoors as it makes him “feel free’ and he enjoys painting “difficult, different scenes”. Up close, his works can be experienced as colourful abstracts, but its with stepping back a few steps when one can appreciate the scenes unfolding in front of you.
He considers himself successful at ARTE as he has a following of locals, expatriates and tourists. His advice to other artists is to “have courage to work hard”.
Seeing art as his “path”, Usama believes having an art talent is a true gift. His hopes is for art to be used in some form of humanitarian activities all over the world. But until then, he is looking forward to continue painting new “masterpieces”. Usama is also planning on presenting online painting classes in the near future.
Some fun facts on Usama… his wife is an amazing cook and is happy to share her treats with others at the markets; he enjoys bowling; his favourite colour is blue; and he busts a few moves to his favourite movie Saturday Night Fever!
You can find Usama at the ARTE -The Makers’ Market on Friday, September 11th at Times Square Center. You can also have your portrait drawn by Usama if you are able to sit still for a few minutes during the birthday celebrations.
