We are very excited about ARTE’s participation and involvement with the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature on the 6th and 7th of March. Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice-President & Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, and in partnership with Emirates and the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), the Festival creates a wonderful opportunity for UAE nationals, residents and visitors to meet world famous authors, attend literary debates, listen to readings, participate in workshops and experience the exciting Fringe and children’s events.
You can find ARTE at the Fringe Village around the Waterfront level of the InterContinental Hotel, Dubai Festival City, from 9 am – 6 pm.
Self-confessed bibliophile Jan’s love for literature is palpable. A long term participant at ARTE, her talents are multifaceted: Jan is a published writer, journalist and artist. ARTE is grateful to have had her design, manage and write this very blog for over two years.
Writing poetry since the age of 9, Jan’s short literary fiction has been published in various magazines. Receiving a master degree in Molecular Biology led her to work in medical communications. But it is her love for the arts, travel and culture that sparked her travel communications which can be found at www.travelartslife.com .
Jan states, “I’ve always written spontaneous poetry and the doodles and intuitive art in the last few years have helped me write poetry on a more regular basis to go with my work”. Carrying a sketch book and journal with her at all times, Jan jots down everything that inspires her in an instant, which brought her to create her series of travel sketchbooks and journals. The covers are decorated with Jan’s own doodled artworks and poetry, leaving the pages blank for others to fill.
Mostly inspired by her travels, she also incorporates her love for fairy tales. Jan fondly remembers reading Hans Christian Anderson’s stories of The Red Shoes and The Little Mermaid, as well as the poems of the “comical chap” Grasshopper Green. Jan also creates blank greeting cards featuring images taken from her insect and flower photography.
Her artistic endeavours do not stop here. Under her artisan trade name Janys De, Jan has an extensive collection of fashion accessories, with a special focus on cuff links. Her doodled designs from her sketchbooks are translated in to specially designed resin cuff links with literary themes that are linked to her love for books featuring Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Who (c.1980s). You can also find limited edition pocket squares which Jan hand stamped with a travel and navigation theme inspired by The Pirates of the Caribbean and The Chronicles of Narnia.
More about Jan
Moving to the UAE less than one month old, Jan is essentially a ‘third culture child’. Having lived in Abu Dhabi most of her life, Jan completed a BSC in India before achieving her masters in the UK. Currently, Jan is running a business in medical/healthcare and digital communications, serving the pharmaceutical, wellness and more recently, medical travel sectors. Jan is also a travel arts wellness blogger. Her art includes mixed media and experimentation with resin. For Jan, dancing helps the creative flow to paintings and writing, admitting “my process is all about spontaneity and sometimes includes spontaneous dance movements”. Well, we at ARTE say “get your groove on girl”!
Jan’s enthusiasm and love for literature is an inspiration to us all. Just like Jan D’Sa, we should all find our passion and dance to it, doodle it, translate it and create it. Find her at the Festival of Literature; get yourself a unique sketchbook or journal and start noticing the magical inspiration the world around you offers.
