Stefano not only designs beautiful jewelry, he has just been awarded a diploma to teach yoga formally. He was recently featured on Dubai One TV, where the camera caught him firing his exquisite jewelry pieces in his workshop; and the other slide showed him in going into various ashtanga yoga poses with ease. He says, “Yoga helps me to keep grounded, centered, focused while designing and making jewellery is the best way for me to express and materialize my creativity. The focus of my work is to find a natural way into feeling things – feeling the material I am working with and feeling the smooth facets of the stones. It’s about working from the heart without trying to force how a piece is going to look like. I do not like uniformity. I am someone who believes in the free-flow of life and creativity and my jewelry pieces reflect this.”
The Swiss handcrafter has one phrase to share when asked who inspires him when creating his work: ‘my Soul.’ Silver, bronze, brass, copper, semi-precious stones, mother of pearl and genuine pearls feature in his work. “I love soldering banding metals because I like creating sculptures. It’s always interesting to create new shapes with metal and finding ways to work around the stone, as if I am sculpting the best ‘dress’ for the stone.”
Stefano’s favourite pieces are the moon pieces of jewelry. He is fascinated by the surface of the moon. “The surface of the moon exudes some amount of disorder. It is full of craters, but when the sun’s rays illuminates its surface, it comes to life. I try to capture this disorder in my moon pieces of jewelry. Instead of leaving the holes devoid of life, I highlight them with gemstones or pearls.”
Stefano receives a lot of requests for customising jewelry. “People sometimes want a bigger ring or bigger earrings,” he says, “And I want to please them. However, as I do not use a mold, I have to handcraft everything from scratch and it is next to impossible to reproduce exactly the same piece twice.” This, we believe, is a marvel because whatever Stefano produces is one-of-a-kind.
